About Hair Loss
Many things can cause hair loss in men, women and even children. Of the various conditions or medications responsible for hair loss, genetics is most common and unfortunately the most permanent to an extent. An abundance of a male hormone referred to as DHT or dihydrotestosterone is responsible for the male and female pattern baldness (genetic hair loss). Luckily today, with the help of research and modern technologies, doctors are able to reverse a once permanent loss into a natural reoccurring hair growth in the areas where recession or balding have occurred. Hair transplants, are an increasingly popular option to individuals who want to restore their youthful appearance. These individuals may feel that a portion of their life has been taken from them due to early hair loss beginning around age 18. For men, by age 25 hair loss is often extensive, over the entire scalp with the exception of a remaining horseshoe pattern on the sides and around to the back of the lower scalp. For women it can occur at any age and for a number of reasons including genetics as most often the case with men.
By extracting sections of hair follicles on one’s head where hair continues to grow unaffected by the DHT hormone; doctors can transplant these healthy follicles commonly referred to as grafts, to the areas where hair loss has occurred, known as the recipient sites. Via cell regeneration and natural growth of the transplanted donor follicles, individuals can once again grow their own hair, naturally. This type of hair restoration, while sometimes taking more than one procedure, is a proven effective and increasingly popular solution to male and even female pattern baldness.
Who does Hair Loss affect?
Though many think hair loss primarily occurs in men, a surprising 40% of all hair loss occurs in women. Childbirth, stress, thyroid problems, even the continued wear of hairstyles like cornrows or pigtails can cause such hair loss. For women hair loss or thinning occurs randomly over the entire scalp. For men, hair loss occurs most often in a receding pattern leaving hair around the sides and back of the head. Due to the varied causes of hair loss more common among women, re growth of their natural hair is more likely unless it is due to genetics.
Hair Restoration: The Process
There are several factors to ensuring a hair transplant is successful. Without careful planning and understanding of the patients hair line qualities and facial features, and characteristics, transplants can lead to areas showing uneven density, or patches where scalp is visible between follicular units. The volume of hair should be evenly distributed throughout the balding areas by using small follicular units of 1-4 hairs per graft. By using these smaller grafts, hair restoration results can appear so natural, even undetectable by a hair stylist. These smaller grafts also allow a more natural look and successful healing, standing less chance of permanent scarring or failure of growth at the recipient site.
